The Future Of Blockchain Is Gaming (Announcing Milkomeda Gaming Grants)
Over the past decade of blockchain technology being out and in the wild, we have seen numerous trends sweep the space again and again.
In the early days, much of the focus was on differing PoW schemes and optimizing the monetary policy of the cryptocurrencies themselves. Later on we moved into the ideas of tokenizing with colored coins, which eventually led into ERC-20’s and the whole smart contract revolution.
From there Proof of Stake blockchains came into the mix, proving that new innovations in consensus were possible and offered new potential in efficiency and scaling. In tandem DeFi arose onto the stage and proved just how far the financial applications of blockchain can go.
All of these steps, among countless others, were pivotal in proving that blockchains were the ideal foundational technology for financial applications. However while one of the major underlying principles of blockchain, decentralization, has moved mountains in the financial sphere, it has had limited progress branching out from there. Specifically, in regards to decentralized blockchain gaming, we believe that this is one of the areas which has had the least amount of net innovation overall.
Decentralization Over Monetization In Gaming
Of course, there are numerous projects across several chains trying their best to convert existing gaming models into working with blockchain, however, currently it would be a serious stretch to argue that gaming has been changed by blockchain to anywhere near the same degree as finance has.
The Milkomeda Foundation however believes this is not because there is no application of blockchain in gaming, but instead it is due to the fact that everyone is simply focused on tokenization while missing the big picture.
Blockchain gaming shouldn’t mean that players must pay $1,000 in NFTs just to get started or rush to be early to a new game to get in for cheap. It should mean that users truly control their games and hold the reins for years to come. Existing gaming models (and even current generation blockchain games) are all centered around centralized companies holding the game code base, game servers, game balance, and the future direction of the game itself hostage.
The Milkomeda Foundation believes that the next major step in blockchain gaming will be just as significant as the paradigm shift between the initial threads talking about how tokens could be added on Bitcoin compared to what DeFi is today. Decentralized blockchain gaming is just as much in its infancy as blockchain technology was in the 2010–2012 era.
Building The Future Of Gaming On Milkomeda
The Milkomeda Foundation is excited to announce that we are opening the Milkomeda Gaming Grants Program. We believe that this is a key moment to support this burgeoning movement towards decentralized gaming, thus empowering users of each L1 that Milkomeda is deployed on to get a taste of the best in blockchain gaming technology.
Grants will be of a minimum of $15,000, with a specific focus on innovative and decentralized games and ecosystem tooling around them which will be deployed on Milkomeda. We are primarily looking for teams who have a solid background in both blockchain and gaming together with a clear vision and understanding of how they can deliver something that actually pushes the space forward.
All grant applications should include:
- At least one brief project overview document which outlines what you are attempting to achieve and provides us with the wider vision.
- At least one technical document explaining exactly how you intend to integrate with Milkomeda with sufficient detail to answer all major implementation questions.
- A roadmap with key milestones and timelines which map onto the wider vision & technical implementation.
- A breakdown of your expected costs and how large of a grant you are asking for.
- Sufficient explanation throughout all of the previous points which make it very clear how your project is an innovative next step towards decentralized blockchain gaming.
