“I don’t think you’re gonna make it”, she says.
They nodded, looking dispirited at the floor. “Not this semester, anyway.”
A moment of silence.
She was tired, and the road home went up the hill, and that meant her instincts kicked in: her pace more frequent, her breath a little shorter. A bad habit: everything that pushed back, she took as a challenge. She was built that way, she thought, and in a way it wasn’t wrong.
