Summer Tips for Staying Safe in the Sun
With yet another notorious Maltese heatwave approaching, we thought it would be best to give our followers some advice regarding staying safe in the sun.

Avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion by ensuring that you are well hydrated.
One can do this by drinking at least 9 cups of water per day, and staying indoors during the hottest time periods of the day — which are between 10AM and 4PM.
When outside for extended periods, wear sunscreen which is SPF 30+ or stronger.
Symptoms of dehydration and heat exhaustion include headaches, fatigue, nausea and confusion.
If these symptoms occur, drink plenty of water and apply cooling treatments, like ice packs and air conditioning.

Wear lightweight, light coloured, loose fitting clothing, to help keep you cool. Further protect your head and eyes by wearing sunglasses and a hat, so as to keep those harmful UV rays off your head.
If exercising, do so in the early morning or late afternoon / evening, so as to reduce time spent in direct sunlight. When doing so, rest often in shady areas and keep hydrated.

Going to the Beach?
Prevent ear infections by avoiding swimming in dirty water and drying ears thoroughly after swimming.
Using earplugs or drops that coat the ear canal may also prevent getting ear infections.
Symptoms include pain, itching, fluid discharge, swelling and muffled hearing. Treatment normally includes antibiotic ear drops and pain relievers.
Dealing with a Jellyfish Sting?
After someone is stung, wash the wound with seawater.
Any remaining tentacles should be removed using tweezers or even scraped away using a credit card.
Rubbing with vinegar can also help to treat the painful stings.
Ice packs may help to ease the pain.

Finally, remember to never leave children or animals unattended in a closed and parked vehicle. In a 27-degree Celsius day, temperatures can reach deadly levels in 10 minutes.
