Farewell, old boy

A young man and his hound walk a busy road
Some cat darts past to incite and goad
Leashes pull taut, collars slip free
But cats find refuge up any old tree.

Tires screech, and horns angrily blare
A lifeless body is thrown through the air
His knees find the asphalt, helplessly crying
Beside his companion, whimpering, dying.
