As creatives we can often get so caught up in our work that we often forget to check in our ourselves. Now that we’re halfway through the year, it’s important to take time to reflect on what you’ve been doing during the past six months, and how you plan on continuing to accomplish your goals throughout the next half of the year. A mid-year review is a great way to keep yourself on track for accomplishing your short-term and long-term goals. In order to get started with your self-assessment, here are a few questions to ask yourself:

  • “What have I accomplished in the past six months?” — You should first acknowledge and be proud of all that you’ve done since the year started. Way too often we don’t realize how much we’ve done, and it’s important to recognize that first.
  • “When was I happiest in the past six months?” — Your answer should be something you should take into consideration the next time you’re feeling burnt out. The next time you’re feeling down, try to remember when you were happiest and recreate that feeling to give you the energy boost you need to continue the work.
  • “How can I learn from my mistakes?” — As we build our careers, we’re going to come across many bumps along the road. How you respond to them is the lesson that you learn, so the next time you may come across that same bump, you’ll have a better way of handling it.
  • “Where have I been focusing my energy?” — Sometimes we stretch ourselves too thin trying to focus on a variety of things: work, building our own brand, friends, family, coworkers, and others. Because of this, we can develop anxiety and not focus on our true priorities. Once you figure out where you’ve been focusing your energy, you can better understand what is important and what isn’t.

Now that you’ve asked yourself these questions, make time to write your answers in a notebook or type them up in a Google doc. Once you’ve come up with your answers, it’s time to implement these plans and put them into action. What can you do, starting today, that will help you become closer to your short and long-term goals? This can include creating a flowchart, roadmap, or a vision board in order for you to get a concrete visual on what you can achieve.

This time of reflection that you’re taking is also a good time to look at some of the habits that might be holding you back. If you still find yourself waiting until the last minute to finish a deadline, work on prioritizing your time better. If you want to exercise during the week instead of laying on your couch watching Netflix for four hours, hit that treadmill right after work. Change will be difficult at first, but the reward that you get at the end will be worth it, and will help you finish the rest of 2018 strong.
