How to reparent yourself

What does it mean to reparent yourself? It means becoming your own wise inner parent. This is especially helpful when we suffer from self-sabotage.

Reparenting ourselves is done through meeting our own needs in 4 different categories:

1/Physical needs: this involves taking care of ourselves physically by eating well, sleeping well, moving our bodies, engaging in self-care activities (like taking walks when feeling overwhelmed, getting that hair cut etc), drinking enough water…etc. This especially involves taking care of our physical appearance by maintaining our physical hygiene, dressing well, and getting makeovers when needed.

2/Mental needs: this involves taking care of our brain and thoughts. This consists of noticing when we’re operating in cognitive distortion mode, being mindful and completely present in what we’re doing, indulging in new experiences and learning new skills, and exercising and good nutrition which help build new brain cells. It also involves having hobbies and mini-challenges that make use of the brain.

3/Emotional needs: this involves doing inner work, which means constantly noticing when we’re being triggered, having that inner dialogue with ourselves, and being aware of our feelings. It can also include cultivating the self-trust within ourselves (this means when we make promises to ourselves, we keep them), and having a social circle to feel connected to and supported by them.
