Mindful Continous Improvement
Written by Jess Lowry, Founder of Mindful Studio
A passion for problem-solving led me on a personal journey ten years ago when I reached a crossroads. I needed to see myself more objectively, so I applied the same creative problem-solving techniques I use for clients on myself.
I created a mural of my resume, with every job I’ve had since 2004, represented by a post-it note. What this exercise revealed to me was profound: I am so much more than a series of simple job titles. I’m a systems thinker, a connector, and a communicator. Seeing my career as a collection of patterns and themes exposed my values, strengths, and the many failures that taught me to work smarter, not harder. This realization sparked the idea that these creative problem-solving techniques shouldn’t be limited to designers — everyone should know how to solve problems creatively.
Launching Mindful Studio: A Human-Centered Design Practice
Inspired by my experiences as a design scientist over the past few decades, I’m proud to launch Mindful Studio. As the founder, my mission is to grow a practice that follows essential human-centered design principles to help individuals, groups, and organizations continuously evolve. Mindful Studio is built on the belief that everyone can benefit from creative problem-solving, not just in their work but their lives.
Nike’s Continuous Evolution
When asked for examples of companies that lead in continuous transformation through mindful practices, Nike is always at the top of my list. Nike’s ability to stay relevant by leveraging creative problem-solving, authenticity, humility, and social responsibility is truly inspiring.
Here are some of Nike's key creative strategies for continuous improvement:
Innovation in Product Development
Nike’s commitment to innovation is unparalleled. The company invests heavily in research and development to create cutting-edge products that enhance athletic performance. Technologies like Nike Air, Flyknit, and the self-lacing Adapt sneakers demonstrate how Nike consistently introduces new technologies and materials to keep its product line fresh and appealing.
Brand Power and Storytelling
Nike’s brand is one of its most valuable assets. Through compelling narratives that resonate globally, campaigns like “Just Do It” and endorsements from iconic athletes have cemented Nike’s position as a leader in sports and culture. This powerful storytelling ensures the brand remains at the top of the mind.
Personalization and Customer Experience
Nike has embraced digital transformation to enhance the customer experience. With apps like Nike Training Club and Nike Run Club and the ability to customize products through Nike By You, the company offers personalized experiences that build customer loyalty and engagement.
Sustainability Initiatives
Nike is also committed to sustainability, with initiatives like the “Move to Zero” campaign aiming to reduce carbon emissions and waste. Products like the Nike Space Hippie line, made from recycled materials, reflect Nike’s dedication to sustainability, appealing to eco-conscious consumers.
Global and Local Market Adaptation
Nike maintains a strong global presence by adapting to local markets while retaining a consistent brand identity. The company tailors its strategies to meet regional preferences, demonstrating cultural sensitivity and business acumen.
Diverse and Inclusive Marketing
Nike’s promotion of diversity and inclusion is evident in its marketing campaigns, which champion athletes from various backgrounds, genders, and abilities. This inclusive approach strengthens its connection with a broad audience and reinforces Nike’s socially conscious brand image.
Strategic Collaborations and Partnerships
Nike’s collaborations with designers, artists, and other brands create buzz and excitement. Limited-edition releases from partnerships with Off-White, Travis Scott, and Supreme keep Nike at the forefront of fashion and pop culture.
Adapting to Market Trends
Nike’s agility in adapting to changing market trends and consumer behaviors, such as the rise of athleisure and e-commerce, ensures the company remains relevant in a rapidly evolving retail environment.
You don’t need to be a massive corporation like Nike to continuously improve, adapt, and collaborate with subject matter experts. This ability to evolve and respond to the changing world is at the heart of what I hope to achieve with Mindful Studio—helping people and organizations survive and thrive in an ever-changing world.
