Oh man… Great read Carl. I’m a little disappoint that I never got notifications from Medium when you posted these, although I got emails about lot’s of other articles being posted. Anyway, what an informative article! I never really thought to look at 눈치 in a neurological way like this. There is definitely a lot of amygdala involved though. I can vividly imagine that minor cold sweat I would get when my father in law said something really fast in Korean to me that I didn’t quit understand — and the fear that I had made a cultural mistake and somehow lost his approval. That’s definitely the saber tooth tiger right there.
And thanks for mentioning linking the channel in there. Much appreciated!
I also liked what you said about mindfulness and how it doesn’t have to be done in a set way. I think that’s what stops most people even before they start. “Oh I have to shave my head and move to a mountain? No way. Oh I have to believe in this magic spell before I do it? Not for me.” This line of thinking is a barrier that needs to come down. Perhaps you would be interested in Sam Harris’s book Waking Up. I read it recently and although he gets a little too fired up about knocking down the religions of the world, the information about mindfulness and meditation is great. He has a podcast too…
Anyway, gonna read your next post now. Keep it up.
