Can you imagine a star athlete trying to hide their weaknesses in front of their coach? Would you tell your personal trainer, “Oh, I’m pretty fit, I’ve got it under control” when she asks you how she can help you achieve a better workout? Of course not. That is not how a coaching relationship works.
How to Think About Your Career

Julie Zhuo Thanks so much for sharing this perspective! :D I’ve always wondered about this and also incorporated it whenever I could, but actually not very often when I absolutely must — and so I’ve been trying to be fearless and get better at this! It now feels far more liberating/affirming to hear it loud from someone of your caliber and experience!

A few related questions: Why do you think many companies still have different people assigned to employees as their mentor and manager? Is it only because a manager may not be able to spend more hours and so a mentor is needed to fill in? Or do you think the shift to this kind of thinking is still underway, and not yet same as that of the coach analogy here? Also curious to know how Facebook or other companies of Facebook’s size operate in this front?
