SMART goals are defined as Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This method promotes detailed and precise goal setting. For example, rather than simply wishing to improve health, a SMART goal is more concrete, like “Plan to run three times a week for 30 minutes, aiming to lose 10 pounds by December 2024.”

To effectively create your goals using the SMART framework, consider these guiding questions:

Specific — Setting Your Focus Clearly

  • What is my precise goal?
  • Why is it significant?
  • Who will be involved?
  • Where will it occur?
  • What limitations might I encounter?

Measurable — Measure What Matters

  • How can I track my progress and know when I’ve succeeded?
