A real, live, actual nice guy is never going to say, “You don’t like me because I’m nice”. A real, live, actual nice guy is going to take the first indicator of, “Thanks, but I’m not interested” as what it is and stop asking you. If the two of you click in other ways (and he’s smart) he might have a good friend.

The voice saying, “You don’t like me because I’m nice” is equally likely to say things like, “Why do you want to be with your friends instead of with me?” as well.

If it’s any consolation (and I doubt it will be) I’ve had a few guys hit on me and when I say, “Thank you for the compliment, but I’m interested in women”, the majority of them go ballistic. A couple have said, “Too bad, but thanks for being (fill-in-the-blank). But most of them acted like they were doing me a favor and I spit on them.

At this point, I’m working on my “Hermit, First Class” merit badge.
