Centraal Station, Rotterdam (1)
part 1: mail hall
Rotterdam Main Station was completely rebuilt 2008-2014, and is now an iconic architectural landmark of the city.
It makes no sense to rewrite the Wikipedia entry, so I’ll just refer you there for a the history.
The architecture won a European price; more on the building and some fantastic pictures can be found here.
For the Weena, the major east-west connection through the city in front of the station, a tunnel was constructed. This leaves a lot of room for pedestrians. trams and bikes above ground.
Below the main hall is also a Metro station.
The hall features a giant video projection screen, showing ever changing harbour scenes. A reminder that Rotterdam is a harbour city.
A very wide row of gates allow access to the train tracks.
