Ideas Can’t Save the World, only Self-awareness Can

Who would have said, huh? Turns out that different ideas, opinions, philosphies, ideologies, etc., will always create conflict among us. We can only change our impact on this planet by using relationships and our day to day interactions as a mirror we hold to ourselves to learn what we are. Period.

Every time a new ideology appears, the total oposite emerges too. Just look at how popular the carnivore diet has become, manifesting the radical opposite of veganism. Ideologies, by nature, create conflict within people. When we defend ideologies and opinions, we’re instantly creating a perceived aggressor. Some vegans might feel carnivores are the enemy and the other way around.

All ideologies stem from a desire for power. Think about it… Imagine you wanna see a world free of refined sugar so that people can have healthier lives. If you had a green button that could make all refined sugar disappear forever, would you press it? Wouldn’t that be a desire to exert certain conditions onto others? Our good intentions make us blind to the fact that we just want to decide what other people should experience. Again, a desire for power, and power will ALWAYS create conflict among people.

The world is not going to change if we don’t change the way we relate to each other daily, moment to moment. We say society is fucked up, but, who is society other than the sum of the interactions that happen between people every day? Putting the blame on society is an act of victimism. Society is like Santa Claus, it doesn’t exist (tough, I know). Santa Claus is your parents’ intent to buy you gifts. Saying society needs to change while thinking it has nothing to do with you is like expecting Santa Claus to bring you gifts even when you know all letteres addressed to him just end up burning.

Saying society needs to change while thinking it has nothing to do with you is like expecting Santa Claus to bring you gifts even when you already know all letteres addressed to him just end up burning.

So, what to do instead? Just observe yourself, learn self-awareness. When you examine your feelings, thoughts and emotions without the influence of any ideas, opinions or ideologies, you transform the way you relate to people. Thought, the origin of ideologies, ideas, and opinions, stops triggering suffering, conflict or violence. Conflict can be a means of mutual understanding only when there’s no influence of thought in relationships. When thought gets involved, violent conflict will sooner or later arise.

Imagine a vegan and a carnivore talking about diet. If they’ve never looked inside and have little self-awareness, they will try to defend their ideologies, think the other is wrong and eventually create animosity. On the other hand, a vegan and a carnivorethat invested a good amount of time into understanding themselves, their reactions, their emotions, their motivations etc., will be able to share knowledge and insights instead of trying to impose them.
