My OR Playlist

(Disclaimer: I am not a surgeon)

A couple weeks ago I listened to a radio story on how surgeons are using music in the Operating Room to calm both the patient and surgeons.

You don’t have to be a doctor to listen to good music while you work. I listened to Pandora almost every day this summer while typing away at my intern desk. I look around and see my coworkers plugged in too.

I took this chance to be “punny” and compile a list of what I would and would not add to my OR playlist…

According to the radio story, the BMJ (formerly known as the British Medical Journal) recommends:

Any Classical Music
Bee Gees “Stayin’ Alive”
Sade “Smooth Operator”
Toni Braxton “Un-Break My Heart”
Pink Floyd “Comfortably Numb”
Coldplay “Fix You”
Wham “Wake Me Up Before You Go”

Now it’s my turn.

I would add: (I like classical music when I study, but I figured I’d separate that for a separate playlist) Check out the Soundcloud Playlist I made below! I like how some of these songs have clever titles and maybe a “relaxed heartbeat” beat.

The Dirty Heads “Lay Me Down”
EDX “Breathin’”
Gorillaz “Feel Good Inc.”
The Knife “Heartbeats”
The Kooks “Junk Of The Heart”
Lion Babe “Don’t Break My Heart”
Lion Babe “Treat Me Like Fire”
OK Go “The Fix Is In”
OK Go “This Will Be Our Year”
Parachute “Words Meet Heartbeats”
The Police “King of Pain”
Ratatat “Cream on Chrome”
Real Estate “Had to Hear”
Real Estate “It’s Real”
SBTRKT “Right Thing To Do”
Surfer Blood “Floating Vibes”
The Weeknd “Can’t Feel My Face”

What I would NOT add:
(These songs are either too sad, not appropriate, or “dangerous”)

Big Data “Dangerous”
Cake “Shadow Stabbing”
Jet “Look What You’ve Done”
The Kooks “Mr. Nice Guy”
MGMT “Kids”
OK Go “ Do What You Want”
OK Go “Maybe, This Time”
OK Go “No Sign Of Life”
OK Go “What to Do”
The Police “Every Breath You Take”
Red Hot Chili Peppers “Scar Tissue”
SBTRKT “Wildfire”
Scott Joplin “The Entertainer”
Utada Hikaru “Simple and Clean”
Weezer “Say It Ain’t So”
Weezer “Undone”

My OR playlist would only last 56:27 minutes, so this would work best for a shorter operation.

What would you add to your OR playlist?
