Hiking a 14er: What to expect when hiking Mt. Bierstadt
In Colorado, hiking to the top of a 14,000 ft mountain is a rite of passage. Sure, there are countless challenging hikes in Colorado, but there is something special about conquering one of the fifty-three 14ers in the state.
For some, hiking a 14er is the ultimate test of proving one’s hiking ability. You can call yourself an avid hiker, but until you’ve made it to the top of a few 14ers, you won’t be taken too seriously. Hiking a 14er proves that you have the endurance, toughness, and strength to overcome the steep climbs and torturous altitude one faces when hiking a 14er.
Even though 14ers are difficult, they are attainable. If you read my posts from last year, you’ll know that I was nervous to hike my first one and almost did not try it. I was worried about what to bring and what to expect.
Thankfully, the hike ended up being doable and I enjoyed it so much that I hiked it again this year.
I chose to hike Mt. Bierstadt because I had heard that it was a good one to start with. I’ve now hiked it twice and while I had no problems each time, I wish there were things I had known before going.
So, I’ve put this post together to share some tips and photos of the trail to let you know what to expect when hiking Mt. Bierstadt for the first time.
