Exactly! Naive cynicism is the natural endgame of naive hope. When you have unreasonable expectations and they are inevitably dashed, the result is naive cynicism. That’s what happened to the Obama supporters who are now throwing temper tantrums because he didn’t make everything perfect in eight years. Knowledge — what is reasonable and what’s not, the long arc of history and how things get done — is the antidote to both these failure modes.
