I agree the epilogue is key to understanding the book, but I think its message is actually the opposite. The final line before the epilogue is: “ And so I step up, into the darkness within; or else the light.” The reader could be forgiven for closing the book in despair after that line, but those who continue on to the very end are rewarded with the knowledge that the darkness of Gilead does eventually lift. It shows that someday, the horrors described in the story will be ancient history.
To me, the epilogue is about the importance of perseverance and hope when things look most dark.
