So many male tears!

I am always shocked that men seem to believe they are in danger of being falsely convicted of rape. Given that the majority of rapes are not reported, and only a tiny percentage of those reported result in a conviction, the odds of an actual rapist going to jail are extremely low (2% by some estimates). So the odds of an innocent man going to jail for rape are infinitesimal — they’re much more likely to be raped themselves than end up in prison for a rape they didn’t commit.

But since men and boys do seem to be laboring under the misapprehension that false rape accusations are a real problem, we need to correct that belief. For one thing, men’s belief that women lie and accuse innocent men of rape is one of the main contributing factors to the low conviction rate.

Maybe we need to be educating young men not only on the definition of consent, but about these very statistics. Maybe if they knew how rare false accusations are, they would stop being so afraid for their own precious selves, and start worrying about the actual problem of actual rape, which is huge.
