The Value in Sharing Data

In the last year I worked on the value of data with some superb colleagues who are interested not so much in the value of an individual piece of data or data set but in the value that is reached and created when data is shared.

As many who have gone before me have noted this is a complicated issue, not least because the traditional concept of property is to possess, control and exclude others. Indeed, value is often determined by the lengths one goes to in protecting the property from being shared.

In our attempt to understand we came up with a deliberately simple Value of data canvas which asks questions about

  • The data and how it is produced
  • The ecosystem in which the data is and will be used
  • How the data is shared
Value of Data canvas

I have been thrilled at the growing wave of discussion in the areas of data sharing and was particularly taken with the Data Spaces building blocks concept.

Building Blocks Overview

In my recent discussions with clients, I reflected that teams need to iterate around the different building blocks of data sharing and that there is good work going on in all of them.

I created this table of who is doing good work and what they have created. I’d love it to be added to and corrected.

Do please let me know what I have missed out
