Brilliant, clear, accurate, and overdue!
Another interesting challenge to the biomedical model of psychiatry is this: If “mental illness” is a chronic disease of the brain that requires medication and is analogous to diabetes, cancer, etc., why have people recovered with talk therapy and/or life & behavior changes alone?
Don’t get me wrong: psychological suffering is real and can be extremely disabling. But that doesn’t mean the solution is to surrender to labels and drugs. Yes, some people find modern psychiatry helpful. But that doesn’t negate all the inherent contradictions and pseudo-scientific practices of the field.
