We all know the legandary hip hop rivalry of the 1990’s of east vs west coast. With Tupac and Biggie being the faces of the rivalry, it was hard for anyone to not know it existed. But what about now?

We don’t talk about east vs west much anymore, especially with the south and midwest also becoming popular. I thought it would be an interesting idea to see how the east and west coast would rival now with their most popular artsits.

J. Cole: Being one of the most well known rappers of the 2010s, Cole has proved he is lyrically one of the best in the game. With 5 top 10 hits on Billboard and his label Dreamville, its hard to deny his talent and the upper hand he gives in this battle.

Joey Bada$$: Another lyrical prodigy of New york. His mainstream success may not be as colorful as Cole’s, but he is very well known and respected within the Hip Hop community.

ASAP Mob: Hate to group all of them together, but each individual is talented in their own right and represent the east coast to the fullist.

Meek Mill: Even though he isnt in the heart of East coast rap in New york, he reps his east coast city Philadelphia constantly through his music. Meek has become someone very influential not only for his music, but his views on the system and how it is flawed.

Nicki Minaj: Some may love her and some may hate her, but she has had a huge impact on hip hop music and female MCs. Her numerous features and billboard topping songs proves she is a force and is talented not only in her delivery, but her writing.

Joyner Lucas: Joyner is still rising to fame, but his lyricism is something that makes him stand out from the crowd. His viral hit “Im not Racist” led to more Joyner fans and caught the eyes of some of the best lyrical rappers.

Lil Uzi Vert: Uzi brought a different sound to hip hop that was emo/dark, which has grown in popularity. Although not known for his lyricism, Uzi has impacted hip hop and represents the east coast in that subgenre.

Kendrick Lamar: King Kendrick. One of the most well known rappers today. His unique sound and numerous hits make him an influential artist that has shaped hip hop as it is today.

Tyler The Creator: Tyler is most likely the most known member of Odd Future and has brought that name to life for many people. Although Tyler is not one of the most popular artists in the mainstream, his character and influence makes him a current notable rapper of the west coast.

YG: With his numerous hits and respect in the hip hop community, he is a huge representation for the west coast.

Schoolboy-Q: Probably the second most popular member of TDE, Schoolboy has contributed quite a bit to hip hop. His few mainstream hits and his collaborations have made him popular and a good representation of the west coast.

G-Eazy: G-Eazy is one of the most commercial mainstream rappers, but shows off his talents through his own music and numerous features. Although to some he is a bit generic, many people outside of hip hop know his name and he has helped hip hop cross into mainstream radio.

Hopsin: Although he just announced his is taking break, Hopsin has been a well known name for lyricists, even without truly hitting mainstream music.

Childish Gambino: Even though Donald Glover is known more for his acting, his rapping career has made him a notable name in hip hop. “This is America” reached number 1 on Billboard and the corresponding video went viral. This song created conversation and was most likely one of the most talked about songs of the year.

So… who do you think wins ? Both coasts have strong competitors and many more who were not even listed.

Let me know which coast you think is the winner!
