bad joke

I remember when my grandma told me about her life during the World War II. She was only 8 when Germans and then Russians came into her village. The story was ugly and hurtful. It impacted me when I was a little girl. But then, some other historical moments happened that I believed were just some bad jokes:

  1. Princess Diana’s death.
I will never forget the 31st of August 1997. I was 12 years old. I won’t bother you with all the details of that day, but I would mention a few moments that stuck with me during all these years. During the day, I was outside probably playing or maybe doing some shopping. In the evening I got into the apartment, while I was taking my shoes, I heard the TV from the bedroom. The breaking news was that Princess Diana or Lady Di as I remember her was dead. My first though was “Why?”. What could possible happen in order for a royal to be dead? At that time I didn’t know much about her life story so I was really shocked. As a child I learned a lot about the British Royal family and I admired Princess Diana. So my second thought was: “It couldn’t be possible. This is a bad joke. A really bad joke.” After a few days I realised that it wasn’t a joke at all. The paparazzi chased her entire life up until the moment they got all of her. Until this very day I still remember the shock, the anger, the idea that good people die for no reason or for a bad reason in some cases.
  2. September 11, 2001
This is the second time when the history made a choice of laughing in my face. No, it wasn’t a really bad joke as I supposed. It was reality. 2977 people died because of that day without even having the opportunity to say goodbye to their loved ones. I still wonder why beyond the actual terrorist attack. I only suppose that there are so more reasons. Political ones.
I remember going to my aunt’s place that after noon and simply watched on TV how the tower collapsed. My heart was simply shocked and broken. But for me, 9/11 was also a shock because I knew that the States are safe. Safer than any other country. This couldn’t more farther than the truth. At this point no one is truly safe because being safe in a digital world is a luxury.
  3. January 17, 2017: Donald Trump became the 58th president of USA.
In this case I never thought it would happen in this universe. Never ever. Then my first thought was: “another bad joke”. I simply believed that I got into a parallel universe where this is possible. Not in the Prime Earth like you see in the DC stories. I was so angry all that day.
I am not an American citizen. But I know that everything that the American president thinks, does, speaks and breaths affects the entire world. Looks like I was right and hopefully this will end soon.
  4. Covid-19 era.
Just another history’s bad joke. I know, there were some other eras in the past with different viruses and health issues. But in 2020 I thought this shouldn’t be the case. Or should it? Maybe it was about time that the world would stop for a minute and take a break. Or at least rethink the whole living strategy.
Some of them didn’t make it through, some of them left the hospitals with other health issues and consequences.
And there are still plenty of people who think that the virus doesn’t exists. I hope that they would never find out, especially in an ICU style. Period.
I think wearing a mask doesn’t hurt that much. Anyway, eventually this joke will end somehow with a vaccine or through a natural immunisation. I still feel like the Chinese are not to blame, but the entire world. This is like a mistake that was made because of negligence. And a lot of innocent people payed the price.

And now I just wonder. Is it history that is playing tricks on me? Is it just a feeling of seeing some events as really bad jokes coming my way? They say that history repeats itself until we learn to change some things in our lives.

I hope I’m not the only one thinking about this. During the Covid-19 period I learn how to adapt to the new situation at home and at work. I hope that one day my kids and grandkids would be grateful that today’s change it would make the world a better place to live in. Or not. We shall see.
