I’ve got the job and fulfilled my dream.
I always knew I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life in the country where I was born. I just didn’t know where I wanted to be.
In 2012 I had the chance to go to study in Madrid and I loved each second there. Every step, every rain, every walk and the wonderful people I had met there. I was lucky enough to fall in love and to get love back.
But then the dream went in stand by. I had to come back, I knew where I wanted to be. My love decided to try luck in my country but she was not very lucky. Mexico can be mean sometimes.
I was desperate, I was a visual designer going on UX, trying to achieve a feat. Finding a job in Spain, from afar and get enough money and the VISA. I had love, love made me very strong.
One day I had a job offer from a fortune 500 company. I looked it up. It had branches in different parts of the world…even Spain…CHANCE! Applied for the job, got the job, got a good reality check on what would imply being a UXer fulltime. Loved every challenge that came to me.
I became a weird breed of introvert. The one that talks to lot of people to learn and then keeps sharing what she learned. I made myself a name in my capability and I was able to find the person who was in charge of UX in Spain. I didn’t go and said: “Can you give me a job?” I asked first how was the european user. Then asked what were the needs of the capability in Spain. Later on I gave some UX classes in my Office and invited spanish people vía remote. I became close but not quite there yet.
Some months later I asked for a chance and the chance wad given. A lot of people made my dream possible. My ex-lead (later on I became team lead I her instead) because she knew my battle from the beginning and supported me. My current boss in Seattle who asked about my goals and even wrote me a recommendation letter. My soon to be boss in Spain for being stubborn and keep pushing to have me there.
And to my ex-love. In the process love didn’t last but it was the strongest fuel I ever had. I appreciate all the people who believed. I wont fail you and I wont fail me.
