Songs That Can Help You Forgive
I just recently completed a free online course on Music for Wellness that explored how we can use music to help us through a number of tough situations and emotions. The course even inspired us to make up some music we could sing to or play for ourselves to comfort and heal us.
One of the “songs” I created as part of my coursework was a little jingle that can be sung over and over again. I sing it to myself at least once each day to remind myself of the power and the possibility of forgiveness:
And that got me thinking about other music we could listen to that might be able to help us as we move through this forgiveness process.
Turns out, there are several songs that deal with forgiveness. Here are just a few. Listen to them every day — maybe more than once, if you need to…until you’re ready to release the hurt and the anger.
“Forgiveness” by Matthew West is one of my all-time favorites.
I love how the lyrics acknowledge the reality of the pain, both of the wrong that was done and of the pain involved in the forgiveness process. It’s not easy, by any means, but it’s definitely possible, especially with God’s help.
This is another song that’s simply called “Forgiveness.” It’s by Toby Mac and features Lecrae.
This song is a great reminder that we all do things to hurt other people. We’ve all done things we’re not proud of. But, most importantly, we’ve all stepped across that line called “sin” that hurts our relationship with God. He forgives us when we call out to Him, and part of our response to the forgiveness we receive should be to extend forgiveness to other people (Matthew West’s song also touches on this).
“I Forgive You” by Kellie Pickler hits me especially hard because I’ve been there.
I’ve tried to drown out my hurts in the past with alcohol and other things that never could take care of it. I’ve tried to hold on to the dream that things could be different — the thought that things SHOULD be different. But they’re not.
The only thing that truly helps is to accept the facts as they are, and to make and act on the decision to forgive.
So, these are some of my favorite songs about forgiveness. What are some of yours? Let me know in the comments. I’m always looking for new music to listen to…especially if I can use it to heal my mind and my soul.
This is the sixth post in a series on unforgiveness, and it’s Day 5 of a 30 posts in 30 days challenge (I’ve missed a couple — several? — days. Trying to start over again). We’ll keep exploring forgiveness in the days to come, so stay tuned.
