Directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, the 2011 French comedy-drama film The Intouchables tells the story of the friendship between Philippe, a quadriplegic, and Driss, who assists him.

Philippe, a wealthy businessman and aristocrat, hires Driss, who has just been released from prison and is unemployed, as a live-in caregiver. Philippe’s life, previously dull after becoming paralyzed in a paragliding accident and losing the use of his body, changes dramatically after meeting Driss.

Despite coming from entirely different backgrounds and economic classes, Philippe and Driss become best friends, overcoming all their differences and unique traits. One of the most intriguing aspects of the film is how these two individuals, living such different lives, manage to find an incredible harmony together.

You’ll Laugh and Cry at the Same Time

There are very few films that, despite dealing with sensitive realities, manage to entertain. The Intouchables is exactly the kind of film we’re fortunate to have in this regard. Philippe, tired of wealth and luxury, finds a more genuine and fun life thanks to Driss. François Cluzet and Omar Sy, who star in the film, make an excellent duo. The carefully chosen music and the abundance of humor in the film greatly lighten what would normally be a somber subject.

Released in France on 2 November, The Intouchables 2011 became the second most-watched film after Bienvenue chez les Ch’tis, which was released in 2008. The Intouchables was nominated for the César Award in eight categories, and Omar Sy won the Best Actor Award for his extraordinary performance in the film.
