Let life surprise you
I always say that life has the most incredible little ways of surprising us. Up until only a few months ago I would not of understood this concept.
See I came to realize that each time I would set a goal and focus primarily on how my life was going to be once I reached it, I was missing out on what was going on in front of me, the current moment.
Many great sayings state that focusing on the past causes pain, regret often comes up and people get upset over things they can’t go back and change.
Placing too much emphasis on the future causes anxiety into worrying over something that may never even happen. The present moment ends up being robbed of its blessings and teachings.
As our lives evolve over time, family and relationships, jobs, health, environment and goals change. It’s a natural process of life and as these dynamics change we may begin to question the direction we’re going in life.
One activity that has increased my discipline was I gave up tv watching for the entire month of March. This has made a huge impact on my life in an extremely positive way. I realize how much it’s a waste of time and I’ve been able to focus on enhancing my reading and writing skills, connecting with people, but most of all the ability to be more present and alert with my surroundings.
Now, I’m not saying that I won’t ever watch TV again. I like a good movie and a few shows but it’s not a major priority right now. Current events I do follow, which is very important but there are many other resources to get that information from.
When you are having a productive day at work and focusing on making a sale, or signing on to a new business deal, anticipation sets in of all the benefits from achieving the final result, the future. This could be a new client, increased salary, maybe a paid vacation.
The opportunity is great but you may be missing out on the journey towards the goal. Not being present you may miss out on an even better opportunity than the one you originally set your sights on.
We live in a busy world where everything is fast paced and the focus is on the end goal. As you begin each day take a few minutes, close your eyes and savor these few moments. Be open to the possibilities that may benefit you throughout the day and see where it leads you.
After all, life has the most incredible little ways of surprising us :)
Cheers,
Angela
