What is Matt Walsh? A Review.

What Is A Woman is Matt Walsh’s journey into his own paranoia. Billed as ‘the question you are not allowed to ask’ and ‘the film they didn’t want you to see’. Perhaps the first question we should ask is ‘what is Matt Walsh’ and what motivating factors lead this ‘journey’.

Walsh is a straight conservative who is very much on the republican side of politics. His previous work attacks feminism, LGBTQ+ media and even moderate Christians for not being Christian-y enough.- Think Alex Jones but with less passion or entertainment value.

In his opening monologue he cuts video of children playing with an ominous soundtrack. He makes a strange distinction between boys and girls which boils down to boys simply needing guns to be happy while girls are a whole complex other world that he just can’t get his head around.

He invokes the words of Stephen Hawking-”I can understand blackholes, but women, l will never know”. I’m not sure why he feels the need to do this. Is he saying scientists can be as dense as blackholes too, or this film is for an audience who are already firmly entrenched in misogyny?

The backers for the film seem shy to be credited. Daily Wire is linked to brothers Dan and Ferris Wilk’s. F. Wilks gave $75,000 to Jeff Cason in the 2020 Republican primary. Cason has campaigned against LGBT+ issues in school curriculums, calling sex ed literature ‘porn’.

It should be pointed out that duplicitous methods were employed to lure participants into contributing. Trans advocate, Eli Erlick revealed that the production team set up a fake organisation called ‘The Gender Unity Project’ to trick people into giving time to Walsh’s project.

The 1st interview is with Gert Comfrey MTS LMFT. He exploits her kindly nature and unwillingness to define people based on sex. Her credentials are in therapy but Walsh shows no research on her achievements. This interview is set up purely against her with no sensitivity.

The attitude of Walsh is purely to make Comfrey seem unreasonable because she acknowledged the complexity of academic language. If this is a problem about words being hard to understand, then perhaps he could read more academic text on psychotherapy rather than play the idiot.

Our next guest is Marci Lee Bowers. MD. Bowers specialises in gender reassignment surgeries and is well respected in her field. Walsh pretends not to know what a vaginoplasty is (does this man not have google?) and proceeds to ask Bowers to explain it for his audience.

Walsh descends into ‘Transablism’. He is trying to link people who wish to be physically impaired to the transgender experience. This fails for two main reasons. Trans people want a more refined body not a less able one. There is no Dr working to reduce a persons quality of life.

No wonder Dr Bowers calls the whole idea ‘Kooky’ and ends the interview. I’m starting to think Walsh went to school in reverse and learnt less as he aged. How does someone like this become so popular on social media. How does an idiot become so useful? We are about to find out.

Next up we’re off to Aberdeen to meet Don Sucher, proprietor of a Star Wars shop who hit the headlines in 2021 when his story went viral because it had all the right elements for lowbrow talking points on entertainment TV and radio. Vietnam veteran, culture war polarity and stupidity.

Don seems nice enough, stating, “stop trying to shove that shit down my throat, I’m old”. Yeah he’s got enough to think about. After all, there’s over 21.000 characters in the Star Wars universe from 20 million sentient species. Christ knows how many genders between them!

Next we fly to Boston to meet Michelle Forcier, MD, MPH. It’s important to note here that the documentary is centring itself firmly in the realm of transgender children and away from the broader ‘what is a woman’ question. The interview follows the same disingenuous approach.

Walsh’s questioning compares being trans to believing in Santa. Let me be honest, Matt. When l was four years old l was made to queue up in Bolton Shopping Centre and then sit on the knee of this sweaty dude and tell him if I’d been naughty or nice, and guess what? It wasn’t fun.

We are certainly no nearer knowing what a woman is yet . It seems we are being presented with a world in which everyone is obsessed with penises and trans people are either frail and vulnerable or completely mentally ill. I think we are getting to know who Matt Walsh is clearly now.

For Dr Patrick Grzanka (Ph.D) the sequence does the trick of going into Walsh’s mind with a looping refrain and editing of words to give the viewer a sense of “this stuff is confusing”. It’s complex all the gender/identity/sex stuff, that’s the point, Matt.

Walsh asks “If I was to say that I’m a black man would you accept that?”. 1-You don’t inherit your gender. 2- People from all ethnic groups are on the same gender spectrum. 3- There is no indigenous land of trans people we are to be genealogically attached to (kind of wish!).

Next the ghost of Nancy Reagan, sorry I mean, Dr Miriam Grossman MD. This is where the film really hits its stride. Mainly because Walsh talks about ‘transgenderism’ with one who he hasn’t duped into doing the interview, because they are already firmly on board with the trans-panic.

Grossman is a campaigner for ‘awareness of the dangers of sex education’. She is vocal on a pro-life front and speaks about the ‘dangers of promiscuity’. Grossman refers to dysphoria as “an intense loathing of biological sex”. Personally I have no issue with my female penis.

The mode of speech here is that of ‘othering’ the trans experience as a debilitating condition to which we should be happy with sympathy but no validation. On twitter Grossman asks, “has your family fallen down the hellish vortex of gender ideology?” I dunno but it sounds fun!

Next to trans women in sport. Selina Soule, a high-school track runner who took a case of discrimination to court alongside 3 other fellow student athletes in 2019. There is no information regarding the athletes in this interview or to what professional standard the comply.

After a lot of crowd funding and support from conservative Christian organisation, Alliance Defending Freedom. The case was thrown out. It caused a stir in the media for a few days and ignited debate around fairness and parity but only from conservative right wing media.

Walsh will have disappointed many exclusory feminists here because the sports debate is one which fence sitters can be drawn over, but clearly demonstrates that the only time Walsh has empathy with female achievement is when he can focus it through his lens of transphobia.

This film contains a lot footage of people on street corners being asked if it would be ok to see dicks in women’s changing rooms (not sure how many changing rooms Matt’s been in but I don’t ever remember being naked in a public one or looking for dicks, maybe its just you)

It was reported in 2021 that a person identifying as female exposed their penis in a communal area of the spa. A video had gone viral of a lady complaining and this went viral across the popular media. The sole reason Walsh coves this is to align trans people with sex offenders.

Gendered spaces don’t exist to prevent sexual misconduct. The perpetrators of sex crimes don’t care about single sex spaces, or any spaces. The delineation of gender in changing rooms is for solely social politeness and modesty. This film seems bizarrely penis obsessed. Why?

Our next person who has to endure Walsh’s obsession with penises is Congressman Mark Takao. The sequence starts with Takano’s public information film supporting trans visibility and campaigning for the new equality act which seeks to level up on protections of trans rights.

You can see the Congressman faze out as if to say “who the fucks this chump with crap beard and bad attitude”, but he’s polite enough to tolerate Walsh just long enough for him to say some of the dumbest shit imaginable about women seeing penises in bathrooms.

Walsh then invades a pro choice rally where women are chanting “our body our choice”. These aren’t the kind of women/feminists our Matt likes, it seems. Women who want a the right to their own bodies seem to be a bit of an anathema to him. He is asked, politely to leave.

Buckle up guys we are going to Africa. Why are we in Kenya ? Well its an interesting choice of place for an interview about a culture war rooted in American politics, but I assume its something to do with a very dubious link to something authentic or indigenous about cultures.

Matt eats the testicle of some unknown animal to bond with the Maasai guys and asks them what a woman is? can a man be a woman? can a woman have a penis? etc. Obviously they say what we are expecting with laughter at the slightest notion that a person could identify as a different gender than they were assigned at birth.

This speaks of colonial mindset of the noble savage, something that Christian tourists to Africa have thought for decades. You could go to anywhere in the world and find a group of guys who would laugh at the same ideas of gender nonconformity based on the same loaded question.

I don’t think these guys here are the type to be wanting to repeal the Kenyan Section 165 penal code which banned homosexual practices from 1930 and still stands today, imported by colonial whites. Here’s our Matt, another one of them, eating a bollock for our entertainment.

This would be of no amusement to Sheila Lumumba, a 25-year-old non-binary lesbian who was found dead in Karatina, north of Nairobi, on 17 April 2022. Or Maasai girls, circumcised from age 11, soon afterwards married to a man chosen by her father in exchange for cash.

Out of the 53 countries in the Commonwealth – a loose association of countries most of them former British colonies – 29 have laws that criminalise homosexuality.

Dr Grossman is back for a sequence on historical medical mal-practice. Here we get the stories of Kinsey and Money. Alfred Kinsey is probably most well known for his landmark book, Sexual Behaviour in the Human Male (1948). Kinsey’s work gave a psychosexual vocabulary to America.

Walsh focuses on Kinsey’s studies of homosexual activity and studies of sexual responses in children. It’s important to note, Kinsey never researched or catalogued any taxonomies of the trans spectrum. Kinsey is here to play the bogey man and to align gender phycology with abuse.

John Money was an early researcher into gender identity and gender roles. He was a proponent of conversion therapy in children and is most famous for his role in the Reimer case. In 1966, David Reimer suffered a botched circumcision which left eight-month-old Reimer without a penis.

Reimer took his own life in 2004. This is a story of genital mutilation and abuse simply because the parents wouldn’t accept a boy without a penis thus allowed to be experimented on by an abusive Dr. Walsh’s exploitation of his story here is thoughtless and callus.

Next we meet Scott Newgent who is here purely as the evidence that transition fails and this is amplified by talk of mutilation and suicide. It’s sad to watch but sympathy for people who regret their decision is definitely not coming from Walsh’s end of the political spectrum.

For Walsh, Newgent is just a useful chapter in a dossier of evidence that he hopes adds up to a reasonable argument against transgender medical intervention. This fully ignores the positive statistics on successful surgeries and post transition life. It is purely fear mongering.

The stupidest interview of the whole film is given by Sara Stockton. She openly, without any sense of embarrassment or irony, says “kids are now identifying as animals at school and they are purring” and then “ten years on hormones and you are definitely getting cancer”.

Here’s Jordan Peterson. Every idiots elementary philosopher who had a hissy fit once because he didn’t want to refer to trans women as ‘she’. No one’s forcing you Peterson you embarrassing curmudgeon in a cheap suit. Sorry, I refuse to say anything serious about Peterson.

Common theme with the guests in this film is they claim they might get reprisals or shut down for speaking out. It doesn’t seem to have done any of them any harm since they are boosted by Daily Wire, Fox News and other digital platforms. Dr Deborah Soh is no exception to this.

Soh states- “Toxic masculinity is the result of women’s sexual preferences over thousands of generations”. I suppose that’s quite handy if you are a toxic male and want to blame women for your attitudes. No wonder she’s popular among the Breitbart bros. Give me a break!

What next? A trans chick who thinks she’s a wolf? You betcha! We go into some Libs Of Tiktok style frame-up here and I’m here for it. I’m all for people expressing whatever goddamn thing they like. Be your inner wolf, babe. Bark at the Moon! If it’s good enough for Ozzy, Im down.

Then there is the funniest and most honest moment of the whole film. Our Matt finds himself walking around in a prison of his own making in a room of manikins with the voices of the guests ringing in his ears. He looks earnestly around, what is he thinking?

Here’s Matt Walsh in his dystopian sex prison where women are objects and female penises may slip out from any given gloryhole. He goes into his Freudian basement, back to his forensic crazy-wall of drag queens, trans chicks and cut up pornography. “Am I the crazy one?” He asks.

Yes, my man, you are fucking barmy and you need to calm down. At this point he picks up a chair and throws it in an inept rage at the wall just like Jesus in the temple, he’s DONE ASKING QUESTIONS!!!! Which is a shame because we still haven’t got an answer to ‘what is a woman’.

The next sequence starts at Loudoun County school board where he accuses them of being abusers regarding his belief that referring with pronouns that do not correspond with their biological sex is “lying to a child, it’s abuse to a child, and it’s sinning against our God.”

Making such a massive tit of yourself publicly is one thing, but making a film of it so the world can also laugh at you, that is pretty next level. Save us from the freedom to be ourselves! What kind of America does this chump want? Sorry Matthew, the world isn’t yours to change.

The film does have jokes, which is shown in the closing scene were we are invited into Walsh’s home to meet Mrs Walsh who seems to live in a kitchen with their kids, but doesn’t seem to be able to open a jar pickles without his help. It’s just a shame the joke is at her expense.

It is only in this scene we get an answer to his question, ‘what is a woman?’… She says “adult human female” from an cue card . Id be happy with that definition if it hadn’t be co-opted and printed on T-shirts to make money for gender fascists so they can terrorise people.

In summery this film is a an idiots paradise of conspiracies and weaponisation of information against people who only seek to be themselves and live their best life. It forms part of a wider anti LGBT movement which clamour to link basic sex education with abuse.

The film is a project in demonising/scapegoating the innocent using a set of arguments which play into the fears of the worst people amongst us. It will find an audience within an already hateful Twittersphere of misogynists and people who have panic attacks over rainbow flags.

The film does not translate as well to this side of the Atlantic. The gender critical movement in the UK is still pretending to its self that they are on the side of women’s rights. Walsh accidently exposes their lie by demonstrating the puritanism of the trans-hostile message.

The main takeaway from this is that while we used to laugh at the Phelps Family with their ridiculous banners, those same people have now become social media savvy and while the medium might have changed the message is identical. Walsh finds himself only 2 clicks away from hate.

I’m just off out now to go swimming with my girlfriend, we will both use the same beach to changed on , piss in the same water and live in the same world. Avert your eyes from our bodies and Listen to Aretha Franklin’s Natural Woman, That’s my advice.
