The ask was to increase engagement of SK-II products in-store. SK-II Discovery Table is a playful way for shoppers to play, test and learn about the product without a sales assistant hovering over them.

Our research in Japan showed that many shoppers hesitate to pick up products because a salesperson will speak to them when they haven’t decided on a purchase. Aside from training the sales assistants to approach cautiously, we also knew there could be another way for them to learn about the product. Picking up a product from the Discovery Table will trigger interactive bubbles of information, videos, and reviews. This installation is available in the Daimaru Department Store in Shinsaibashi, Tokyo.

The best part is you get to play with the bubbles. Drag them around the screen and pop them!

The bottles are lined at the top of the table, surrounded by the moving rings. The experience begins when users pick up a product they are interested in.

At 0:04 user picks up the middle bottle

I conducted usability tests to ensure that the shoppers would know what to do once they approached it and if they reacted positively to the playfulness of the experience. There was a 95% success rate (calculated by the number of scenarios and the number of users) by the end of the iterations.

How it works

User passes by the table and picks up a product. The table responds by showing them how to test the product.
User then follows the instructions and tests the product on their hands.
There are bubbles floating around the screen and tapping on one brings it into focus. If they tap on the bubble in focus, it pops.
The ‘feet’ of the pucks are positioned differently, forming patterns that can identify a specific product.
