Computers are weird, am I right? Sometimes they want to open up files with the strangest programs. One that I see come up a lot is SVG files, which are graphics … but Windows computers want to open them up with Internet Explorer. SVG files will even have the Internet Explorer icon on them.

So what’s going on here? Well…


2020 edit! Many TTF font files now contain OpenType coding like ligatures, alternates, stylistic sets, and more, as long as the font maker knows what they’re doing and exports their font files in a way that includes those features. I’ll leave this article because it does have good information about what many OpenType features are, and what they do. But it’s outdated and inaccurate to say that only OTF font files contain these OpenType features. ~MM
