EYELASH TRANSPLANTS
Introduction:
Eyelashes have an automation function of protection of eye from injury, dirt and grit. They support the eyes, and finished the facial appearance. A person without eyelashes look strange to others, since they lack one of the common features of the face.
Reasons why people don’t have eyelashes
• Physical trauma — e.g., auto accident, thermal, chemical or electrical burns
• General or local disease that causes loss of eyebrow and/or eyelashes
• Hereditary inability to develop eyebrows and/or eyelashes
• Plucking (to remodel the eyebrow) that consequences in permanent loss of eyebrows
• Trichotillomania, which is self-inflicted obsessive plucking of scalp hair, eyebrows and eyelashes
• Surgical treatments: radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical removal of tumor for cancer.
History of Eyelash Transplants
Dr. Franz Krusius, a German physician, issued his method for reconstruction of vanished eyelashes by collecting scalp hair with a small punch and implanting donor hair into the eyelid with a needle that he designed. In 1917, German physician Dr. P. Knapp, injected into the eyelid border a combined free graft strip from the eyebrow.
In 1980, Emmanuel Marritt MD, a member of the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, published his method for transplantation of single donor hairs from the scalp into the eyelid for eyelash reconstruction. In the same year of 1980, Robert Flowers MD, stated a “pluck and sew” technique of eyelash reconstruction that is in use today in revised version by physician hair restoration specialists.
This procedure has become quite common today with many people opting for it. Clinics that offer hair transplant in Pune also do a eyelash reconstruction procedure along with other hair restoration treatments. Pune has also become a preferred location for cosmetic surgeries as they are quite affordable here compared to metros like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi etc. A few clinics here also offer a free online consultation where you can get good advice & guidance from the medical councilors before considering the treatment.
Types
• Eyelash transplantation for trauma or disease(Reconstructive)
• Eyelash transplantation to improve existing eyelashes(Esthetic)
PROCEDURE:
Step 1:
Using comfortable, computerized local anesthesia and mild sedation the procedure is completed in approximately two hours in an office/out-patient setting.
Hair follicles from the back of the scalp (‘donor area’) are gathered and then exactly implanted into the eyelid.
Step 2:
Absorbable stitches are used in the donor area, which remains untraceable both during and after the healing process.
Approximately 60 lashes or more can be located per upper eyelid through a session. The rooted follicles will finally grow and produce new lashes permanently, starting as early as six weeks.
Step 3:
The recently growing lashes will possess the same features as the donor scalp hair. The lashes will need to be frequently trimmed and curled. Routine ‘eyelash perms’ are suggested for those patients with straighter hair.
Step 4:
It is suggested that the patient should arrange their transportation to and from the office in advance.
Many an hours after the procedure, some discomfort may be felt in the donor area, as well as the eyelids.
Step 5:
Protective spectacles should be worn while sleeping in starting days. Patients will be taught in the mild post-op care and cleansing of the eyelid area. Mild swelling and/or bruising in the eyelid area may continue up to two or three weeks.
Step 6:
The absorbable stitches in the donor area may take up some time to dissolve entirely. Mascara and additional eye-makeup should be entirely avoided during aninstant post-op healing period (approx. 8–10 days).
RESULTS:
Fixed lashes typically shed inside 2–3 weeks, then begin to regrow initially within six weeks. About 80–90% of the transplanted lashes can be estimated to increase. Result will be shown by 12 months.
RISKS:
As per any cosmetic technique, there are some threats that are known and unknown. The safeties of eyelash transplantation are considered to be alike to that of further minor eyelid surgery and depend on a number of aspects. All patients should discuss their questions and concerns with their Doctor in their respective cities like Hyderabad, Delhi etc.
