If You Want My Business…

Enjoying lunch with business associates, referral sources, and friends at Summit.Live

Each year my firm spends tens of thousands of dollars with people and third-party companies who I know, like, and trust. During this same period, I also enjoy referring hundreds of people and businesses (small and large) to valued members of my 30-year-old-global network for help, products, and services.

This past Thursday, I gave a speech at Summit.Live (video) and shared six tips to help everyone safely do business on the digital platforms. In addition to the legal tips I discussed, the underlying premise of my presentation was to emphasize the importance of relationships in business and life.

If you want my business and if you want to be part of my global referral network, I think it’s a gimmie that you’ve got to provide quality products and services. It’s a two-way deal, and I know that if I want to earn and keep your business or, be included in your referral networks, I need to do the same thing.

Along those same lines, for me, there’s one additional requirement to having me as your client or referral source. Not everyone feels this way, but I do.

If you want me to do business with you or, refer business to you, then you also need to be a positive voice in the world and support your online and offline community. I wrote about doing the right thing in your community here.

I DON’T do business with people or companies who insult and put down others. Instead, I DO business with individuals who lift others up and support their industries and communities.

I DON’T refer business to people or companies who go out of their way to be unkind to others or who feel that the way to gain a business advantage is to make derogatory remarks about their competition.

I DO business with people who go out of their way to be kind and helpful to others.

I DON’T do business with people who tell you one thing and then do another.

I DO business with people who walk their talk, try to do the right thing, and keep their promises.

I also DON’T DO business with distracted drivers (but from my earlier post, most of you already know this).

When you have a community and business network that supports instead of ridicules; that offers help instead of hate; that brings value instead of encouraging discontent, then you have a recipe for long-term success. You also have me as a client and referral source for life.

On a daily basis, I believe that’s what a healthy business community and referral network is all about. I hope you’re part of mine.
