Statue of Liberty views during my commute.

If someone told you that less than a year from now you would be living somewhere you did not even consider moving to, you probably would not believe them. Neither did I. And yet here I am, spending my first few nights ON AN ISLAND! An island located 30 minutes away from the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, an island with population close to 500,000 people, an island that is a part of big city but also isn’t. If you have not guessed the name of it, it is because you, just like myself less than a year ago, do not have it on your radar.

I have moved from Brooklyn to Staten Island, NYC.

Here’s a full story. I am a Kyiv, Ukraine native who was born and grew up there. I moved to New York at the age when I was about to say goodbye to my teen years.

Brooklyn was my first stop, and I have never lived anywhere else since. Brooklyn became my home, the place where I met my husband, and in a way the symbol of progression and positive change in my life. It has been twelve years since I moved here from Kyiv. Twelve years in Brooklyn.

And now we found ourselves moving across the New York Harbor, from one island to another. I am excited for what’s coming for many reasons: new place, bigger space, close proximity to the city, quiet neighborhood, free ferry… :) But in all honesty — I am a little nervous. Having lived in Brooklyn for so long, knowing every neighborhood, the move to Staten Island is like moving to another unknown city where you know no one.

I am excited for my next adventure though! I am excited to explore the island, find new favorite places to eat and hang out, meet new people, and take in everything that my new home has to offer. That said, I am also excited to share my findings with you! Just as I was clueless about Staten Island, many of you may also be wondering what it is like. I will share my experiences here, so stay tuned for my upcoming stories, and don’t forget to check out my Instagram account @mitetyana, and follow #FerryRideAcross hashtag to see my posts about Staten Island. I am already loving it here, and I am sure you will too!
