The quote, „you can do anything if you try“, reflects an attitude for which I love American people. It is about „Encouragement.“ Americans always try to encourage you. It doesn’t matter if it is about „trying out something “ or just „trying out yourself.“ As long as it rules within your capabilities, they will motivate you to do it. . When I called Surf Instructor Michelle Sommers for a surfing lesson, I was not sure about the outcome. I was uncertain about my capabilities to learn it. Am I too untrained, not agile enough? But Michelle immediately took my fears…

First time we learned about „The Wave“ was in Page. A small town at the Utah Arizona Border. Coincidentally. while asking a local for direction. We we were immediately drawn in by the insights he gave us about the area, like the “White Pockets”; “Toadstool Hoodoos”; “Paria Canyon”; “The monkey farm” and “The Wave” of course.

Most visitors are simply rushing through this city, hunting for other famous tourist sites like the Grand Canyon or the Monument Valley. What they don’t know is that this area is full of miraculous places that are still completely hidden to the masses.

This…

Do you want to know what I believe? I believe that passion is an important factor of success. There is nothing more inspiring than watching people following their inner calling and that they love what they do. Like Kerstin Schey and Jeannette Kraushaar who founded their catering service called „HappyHapps“.

„Small bites designed to make you happy“

There is almost no one else except my friend Kerstin with whom I can fully share and celebrate the joy of exceptional food. Actually, she was the one who inspired me to cook. Respect for good food and high cooking skills had been…

„Pacific Wonderland“ that’s what is stamped on the car plates in Oregon. It’s hard to give „one“ characterization onto Oregon’s geography because it’s so diverse. But one thing is for sure, Oregon is offering some of the most beautiful wild spots in the US. Its landscape ranges from a 363 miles rugged coastline to snow covered peaks of massive volcanoes, thick evergreen rain forests and dry, colorful deserts. The people in Oregon are independent characters, they love the outdoors and have a strong devotion to nature.

„If you want to go wild — Go to Oregon“

And so do Will…

Or admire colorful hot springs with their bright blue water surrounded by fiery arms of fluorescent orange. At Yellowstone National Park you are entering a surreal volcano world that offers one of the most extraordinary wildernesses on earth.

„At Yellowstone National Park you are entering a surreal vulcano world and one of the most extraordinary wildernesses on earth“

We went to the so-called Exumas, a 120-mile chain of 365 cays that are part of the Bahamas embracing in whole 700 islands. Those looking for secluded beaches and starry skies won’t get disappointed. But if you want to find giant sea stars or get acquainted with wild swimming pigs than you better go by boat.

“ Swimming pigs and giant seastars or only two miracles of a not ending list of treasures”

The combination of empty, bleach white sand beaches and the bright turquoise colored water get your first attention. The sand feels like powdered sugar beyond your feets…

Why are white dolls good and black dolls bad?

My team and I took a tour of the African American Museum in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where we gained some fascinating and eye-opening insights. Chattanooga is a middle sized town, deep-rooted in southern traditions. Africans were here first introduced as slaves in 1766, tells us Dionne, the president of the museum.
Slaves with the darker skin were determined to work outside in the field, and those with the lighter skin were allowed to work in the house of the family because their appearance was closer to the look of white people.

“I…

Everytime I had been visiting the US, this question popped up. How much do I tip for a service in a restaurant. And guess what? I never had an answer to it.
Travel guides were mentioning 15% to 20%. The answer of my US colleagues constantly had been 20%, But I never understood why? It sounds like a fortune in European ears!

My colleagues Meredith and Derek who worked during their studies in the service and Karen who is currently waitressing brought some light into that burning question.

And here is the answer:

Federal law in the US regulates a…

Nashville is the capitol of country music, where tomorrow’s hits are written and where performers and songwriters come to make it in the music business and where music is performed just everywhere. Their energy seeps into almost everything in this city. For me the biggest highlight had been the performances on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry, the longest running live radio show in the US. Only enjoying this justifies a visit in Nashville.

“It seems as there is an ongoing song in the air all around the city”

In the numerous bars, clubs, restaurants, honkey tonks, along the…

2/10 of my discoveries in the US

A 4 wheel drive on the beach — Outer Banks, North Carolina

Some of my German Friends will throw up their hands in horror and some of them will be delighted. I never thought that this would exist or even would be possible. “A 4 wheel drive on the beach”. Not just for some minutes. No. This drive can take you easily more than one hour. And where do you find this scenic drive on the beach? On “The Outer Banks”, briefly OBX. You can find a lot of off road areas throughout…
