There are various kinds of engineered wood available in the market like MDF, Plywood, Particle Board, Hardboard and so on. MDF and Plywood are both engineered wood which is generally used for home furniture and decoration. Both MDF and Plywood have their set of benefits and limitations.

They have distinctive properties that make them different from each other.

Difference on the basis of Material :

MDF: MDF is an engineered wood that is made by breaking down wood into wood fibers and combined with wax and resin binders by applying high pressure.

PLYWOOD: Plywood is a wooden board made by stacking thin layers of wood cores and panels over each other.

Difference on the basis of Life :

MDF: In a dry environment, MDF lasts up to 10 years. In comparison to furniture made from real wood, it has a 1/4th life span.

PLYWOOD: Plywood has a durability of 30 years and can last even more If it is laminated.

Difference on the basis of Cost :

MDF: MDF is less expensive as compared to Plywood.

PLYWOOD: Plywood is overpriced when compared with MDF.

Difference on the basis of Usage :

MDF: 1) MDF is generally used for the construction of ready-made furniture, cabinets, etc.

2) To give a traditional look, transparent partitions can also be made using MDF.

PLYWOOD: 1) It is used to build furniture for home and office.

2) Marine Plywood is used for marine applications such as boats and ships.

Difference on the basis of Stability and Durability :

MDF: MDF is not stiff as Plywood and it can be damaged easily.

PLYWOOD: It has a cross-laminated structure, therefore it is more durable and stable as compared to MDF.

MDF is not suitable for outdoor use because it does not handle moisture well. So it can be used indoor as decorative panels or furniture. Plywood can be used for outdoor furniture, doors, floors, staircases and much more.

MDF is suitable for temporary works whereas Plywood is preferred for permanent and heavy works. Choose the right material for your home depending upon the budget and application area.
