‘Natsume’s Book of Friends’ Synopsis
High school student Takashi Natsume has had a ‘sixth sense’ since he was a child. One day, Takashi is chased by a specter, and, on his escape, he unseals the specter ‘Madara’, which had been sealed in a shrine. Takashi hears from Madara about his deceased grandmother Natsume Reiko and finds a ‘friend book’ among her belongings. This book of friends was a contract that allowed her to use specters as messengers. Madara tries to take Takashi’s friend’s book away from him, but Takashi promises to give it to her in exchange for his death. Tamara becomes Takashi’s bouncer. Over the course of the friendship book, Takashi and Madara meet various specters and grow up together.

I only watched a few episodes, but it was a heartful story. A true healing anime. I think one of the popular elements of ‘Natsume’s Book of Friends’ is the beauty of the drawings. Japan’s nature-rich rural towns and specter are a good match, and you can’t help but feel fantastic and nostalgic. Although it is a specter, it usually disguises itself as a cat.
It bears no resemblance to the original white fox-like brave beast, and being called Nyanko-sensei is cute. Takashi’s natural sixth sense made him difficult to understand and feared by those around him. Likewise, the specters have their circumstances. His encounter with the city and the Book of Friends positively impacted him and the specters he associated with. The fundamental similarities between Takashi and the specters make them sympathetic and dramatic.
Natsume’s Book of Friends is an anime that will change the way you think of specter. I urge those who want to enjoy specter and the original landscape of Japan to watch it.
