#43 Horror Game 100 story challenge

With the advent of SNS, today’s society allows people to communicate with anyone, anytime, anywhere. With the spread of the Internet, e-mail became a mainstream means of communication. Before that time, “letters” were the most common way to convey words. Although there is a time lag in communicating through letters, the time and effort required to communicate can nurture the feelings of both parties. Therefore, there are many urban legends and scary stories about letters, and this game “√Letter” is one of them.

Title: √Letter

Genre: Mystery Adventure

Compatible Hardware: PlayStation4

Publisher & Release Date: Hyde.2016.6

Takayuki Nakamura worked for a design firm in Tokyo but left to start his own business. Around the same time, he had to temporarily return to his hometown because his home was to be renovated. When he was sorting through his house, he found a bundle of letters. These were correspondence between him and Aya Fumino, who lived in Shimane, Japan when he was in high school. One of the letters had no postmark, and its contents were so meaningful that he became curious and went to Shimane, where he learned a startling fact…

The game system of this work consists of two parts: a part in which the player solves a mystery while exploring Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, and a love simulation part in which the player recreates the interaction with his penfriend. It has multiple endings, with a total of five different ending patterns to enjoy. It has more mystery elements than horror and may be lacking for pure horror fans. And although the scenario is nice, many people seem to think that the characters in the game aren’t likable… However, the coming-of-age behind “Confession of Her Sins” is worth seeing because it is serious from start to finish (The present and the past intersect to get to the truth.) And you can enjoy the nostalgic illustrations of the beautiful and historic streets of Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture, which is a real city!

I had never heard of this game, so I watched the teaser PV from the official website link and watched the play video on YouTube (The pursuit scene in the puzzle-solving part looked particularly interesting.) It has been made into a movie and is well worth playing once!

See you tomorrow!
