Here I talk about how and why we needed the redesign and how it led to a 2.5x jump in no. of stakers participating in governance voting too!

One of my exciting finds in crypto was with Evmos — I was among the early adopters and even got a sweet token airdrop as a nod to my adventurous spirit of trying new protocols in the web3 world. It is thrilling to see Evmos rise and see how widely accepted and influential it has become in the crypto community for bringing together EVM and Cosmos ecosystems.

Since its launch, Evmos has managed to build a strong community and maintain a surprisingly stable token price, even in the midst of a bear market. One key to its success is clever tokenomics, especially beneficial for early stakers like myself. Hanging out in the community Discord, I noticed many of the stakers come to reap rewards while the Evmos Devs are still building and the chain is yet to mature further. This meant that stakers participating in governance is essential in these early days for Evmos to sustain itself. From what I’ve seen, many token holders are only coming for the rewards and are missing out on having their say in governance polls.

Why werent stakers participating in Governance?

As a design contributor to Evmos, I took on the challenge of figuring out why many stakers weren’t participating in governance, even though we hoped they would. I set to solve this, & dug into it. I talked to users who regularly popped in every night, without a miss, to claim rewards. After closely observing and jotting down my findings, a pattern emerged. The current Evmos site, designed initially for newcomers claiming airdrops, hasn’t evolved in the four months since launch. It catered only to the folks claiming their airdrop for the first time and not for the regular users who came nightly. It needs a facelift to cater to its loyal user base, those who diligently come to the site everyday to compound their staking rewards every day. With a simple UI tweak, we could make them more aware of governance activities and reduce friction for them to participate in voting.

Solution

Determined to enhance the user experience, I strategically leveraged the habitual behavior of nightly stakers on the platform. Recognizing their routine visit to the staking tab for reward claims as the “happy path,” I integrated governance seamlessly into this process. By transforming the page into a kind of unmissable checklist before disconnecting their wallet, I successfully diverted attention to the previously overlooked governance tab.

Yet, my ambitions didn’t stop there. I aimed to elevate the overall staking experience — making it not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. To achieve this, I harmoniously consolidated information from various user tabs within the navigation bar, presenting it on the main staking screen. This thoughtful design overhaul ensured that users had all essential information at their fingertips, facilitating informed decisions and keeping them abreast of Evmos chain developments. I also added some delights like confetti & a timer to the claim rewards button!

Now, the nightly rendezvous with the platform became a holistic and visually appealing experience, where every element seamlessly orchestrated into a symphony of efficiency and elegance. The staking process transformed from a routine task to a breeze, making user interaction with Evmos a delightful and an engaging journey.

How did the users like it? Did I reach my goal?

The impressive outcome? A remarkable 2.5x increase in the number of participants engaging in governance and voting on proposals. Users expressed satisfaction with the consolidated information on a single, visually appealing page, providing them with a quick overview of their wallet status and overall chain trends, keeping them effortlessly up-to-date. This redesign played a pivotal role in driving the overall growth of the platform.
