Title: Like the islands themselves, some exciting, some dull

Review: You want a vacation where you get away from it all? This book is for you. ATLAS OF REMOTE ISLANDS takes us to 50 islands that range from the relatively obscure to the ridiculously obscure, spanning all four of the oceans (well, four oceans when it was written, as apparenty a fifth has been recently added; but don’t worry, the book goes there, too).

Each entry is accompanied by a single page of history of some sort, military or civilian, success or failure, life or death, but a history of some type. These little essays are often entertaining and lead one to delve a bit deeper on the internet. My treasure chest of trivial knowledge has certainly increased on reading this book.

However, after a bit, there is a sameness to the islands and, a bit after that, to the essays, as well. That these islands are so remote often means that they are just not that exciting. Sure they were exciting in the 1800s when man first discovered them and froze to death trying to claim it, but not that exciting reading about them in the here and now.

Still, there is something to them, and to this book as well. It will attract a certain type of reader, one with a curiosity about the world and all the places in it, big and small. They will take something away from the experience of reading this.

Review: Mesmerized. It’s not a list of facts. It’s a journey through storytelling, of local and broader lore, an exploration of topography and what culture, if any, existed on these most remote and sometimes forlorn of places.
I grew up on an island. This transported me to all these others. There is a tactile, even sometimes sensual, feel to the writer’s words. I expect first editions will become highly sought after in the future.

Review: The first thing that struck me about Judith Schlansky’s Atlas of Remote Islands was its physical beauty, a study in orange and blue that is a lot more appealing than it sounds. The type font is a joy to look at and to read, but really I expected no less from the author and designer of [Fraktur Mon Amour]. Each map of the 50 islands in the book is featured on its own individual page surrounded by a sea of blue as if it’s the only place left in the world.

In her preface she introduces her love of maps and their infinite possibilities, particularly islands. Schlansky has a mesmerizing way of writing that made me almost want to take off for the great unknown, however as she notes an island can be paradise and hell. In writing about each of these fifty islands she manages to make a study of the strengths and weaknesses of the human character. From hermits in artic regions, to self-made empresses, from islands where inhabitants depart on suicidal treks to maintain the ecological balance of their home, to one where the inhabitants refuse to leave even though their home is sinking beneath the waves. I read this book on a snowbound day with a pot of tea beside me. Highly recommended

Title: A worthy one day read.

Review: The book itself is very well written and the accompanying maps for each island are very helpful in following the story line. There are three takeaways from this book. First, I have studied maps and charts for a long time, and this book makes you focus on parts of the oceans that may not have drawn sufficient attention before. In my case, that would be the Southern Hemisphere. The book forces you to look at the remoteness of these places and the miracle that they were even discovered in a time before satellites. Second, the vignettes put forth for each island gives a historical perspective. Many of the stories are within the last 200 years, however, it feels like a different millennium because of the remoteness of the places. Third, the distances and timelines at the top of each page, easy to ignore at the start become more of a revelation as time goes on. I would not put this on on the top of my read pile, but for a good one day read, this is a worthy choice.

Title: A perfect small book that leaves much to your imagination

Review: This is a fascinating and unique book. Each island gets 2 pages: a map on one, text on the other. The brief tale about each island is fanciful and often startling and befits the remote and often bleak place. You will not get a comprehensive history, you will be left wanting more — or you can spend time simply imagining what life was like in all the gaps of these stories. A more perfect small book is hard to imagine.

But I deduct one star for the sin of using yellow ink in parts of the maps and timelines — I found it impossible to read those words.

Review: I just finished the book and have the following observations. If you are looking for an in-depth look at any of these islands or the stories surrounding them then this book is not for you. It will whet your appetite for more but leave you to your imagination beyond the single page devoted to each island. If you are looking for something to casually page through and inspire imagination about far away places (as I was) then you will be pleased with this book. Almost all of the islands I had never heard of and there is a mix of terrible places as well as the wonderful. It would be great if she followed up with another more in-depth volume at some point where she could expand the stories to better use the research material she certainly has gathered. For me it is like reading the Cliff Notes to a really great book and then not being able to find the original work. It leaves you hungering for more, isn’t that what a good book is all about?

Review: If you love islands and the further from civilazation the better, you will find this an interesting read. Although there is a map you have to go back and forth to see where the islands are when you get to the pages on a specific island and there are no photographs only drawings.
Some of the islands reviewed are uninhabited or uninhabitable, some have from a few up to several several thousand people. I have no idea how the islands reviewed were chosen as they don’t have much in commom other than that they are remote. Of course there are many islands not in the book that are just as remote so your guess is as good as mine.
