New York’s governor has always been a bully — it just took a little longer for his ways to catch up to him

Some of us — okay, me — warned members of the press not to lionize Andrew Cuomo last year. And now that the New York governor has been accused of sexual harassment and unwanted advances by at least three women, some guilty parties are hiding behind the excuse of being related to the man.

“Obviously, I’m aware of what’s going on with my brother,” CNN host Chris Cuomo said on Monday night. “And obviously, I cannot cover it, because he is my brother,” Cuomo added. “Now, of course, CNN has to cover it. …

Like millions of others in the state of Texas after a winter storm decimated our electrical grid, I spent much of last week shivering in the cold darkness. And just around the time I was beginning to lose the feeling in my toes, Ted Cruz was at Bush International Airport in Houston waiting to board his flight to Cancún.

I learned this only when I finally turned my phone back on to let my family and friends know that I hadn’t died of hypothermia. My battery may have been hemorrhaging power at the worst possible time, but at least I…

Eluding the jaws of truth twice was a miracle, but a litany of pending lawsuits means three times is all but impossible

For a few moments there on Saturday morning, it appeared as if the House impeachment managers were actually going to turn Trump’s second go-round into something resembling an actual trial.

Specifically, they wanted to bring Republican Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler in to testify about a heated call between House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Trump during the middle of the insurrection. Calling witnesses would have established Trump’s remarks during the call (“Well, I guess Capitol rioters are more upset about the election than you are,” he’s alleged to have said to McCarthy) as a matter of the case, and would…

Black folks don’t trust the system because this is what it looks like when it works

As far as the effort to vaccinate my Black ass goes, I don’t require much in the way of convincing. Whatever gets me back to some semblance of normal life — which in my case would be the ability to rap Cardi B’s “Up” out loud at a bar, party, or Walmart parking lot in the South maskless without fear of death — I’m down. But based on my text messages, conversations with select kinfolk, and surveying social media, others in my demo are going to need a wee bit more convincing.

In a New York Times op-ed released on…

Republicans will never come out against the congresswoman — because she’s the sad future of their party

Marjorie Taylor Greene is a dangerous fool in need of adult supervision, but there’s nothing surprising about her rise in American politics. A significant portion of the electorate is no less hollow and hateful in their thinking; they’re the people who helped propel a racist celebrity con man and conspiracy theorist to the presidency. The folks who have an entire media ecosystem catering to their ignorance, no matter how much it drifts towards lunacy. The group that still largely supports Donald Trump.

Select conservatives may not want to be lumped in with a group of foolish conspiratorial bigots when it’s…

The problem isn’t the subject matter — it’s the callousness

Still from BRS Kash’s “Throat Baby Remix feat. Da Baby and City Girls” official music video.

As I officially step into my late thirties later this year, I have accepted that the superpowers of aging will only accelerate with time. In other words, it won’t be long now before I’m tempted to post thirst traps of myself in Under Armour shirts like Tyler Perry and other uncles on the move.

The signs are there. On one hand, a dermatologist tells me I look so much younger than my apparent big ass old age; on another, a different doctor tells me my lingering back problems are sciatica. (If there was any lingering doubt that this is an…

The momentousness of Kamala Harris’ ascension deserved more

I’m just gonna say it: Black folks were robbed of the opportunity to show out for Kamala Harris on Inauguration Day.

Joe Biden may have topped the ticket that mollywhopped Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election, but the only enjoyable part of an otherwise miserable campaign for me was the excitement his running mate instilled in some of us. …

Why mince words? If he’s not going to own up to what he’s done, he doesn’t deserve leniency.

In his first comments to the press since inciting an insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, President Donald Trump did not offer any words of contrition. Instead, he reminded us for the billionth time that he is a spiteful bitch incapable of feeling shame about anything. Yes, even when it comes to the attempted murder of his vice president and members of Congress for the sake of trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

Although House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy reportedly informed House Republicans on Monday that Trump has accepted some responsibility for last week’s deadly riots at the Capitol, you…

Trump Republicans don’t care about politics or people — just power, at any cost

Who could have ever imagined that the political party that’s largely maintained power over decades by employing Jim Crow-like voter suppression efforts and appeals to the lingering racism of the electorate would defecate on democracy like this?

The short answer is anyone paying attention to the Republican Party. Alternatively, anyone who realizes that in a functional democracy, all eligible voters should be able to vote — even the Black ones.

Shocking as it is for all Americans to have to bear witness to a coup attempt this week (in the middle of a plague, no less), it should be noted…

Now that Trump is out, it’s time to shift focus to the one man responsible for the ongoing economic crisis

It’s robbing season, but Americans reeling from the economic crisis — a crisis spurred by the nation’s horrific handling of the Covid-19 pandemic — aren’t stealing items typically coveted during the holiday season.

In a recent Washington Post article, reporters Abha Bhattarai and Hannah Denham highlight that shoplifting has been up since the pandemic began earlier this year. According to the retailers, security experts, and police departments they spoke to, however, this isn’t like previous economic downturns. Instead, people are reaching for items to help satisfy the barest necessities.

“We’re seeing an increase in low-impact crimes,” said Jeff Zisner, chief…
