Disempowerment and Discovery While Living with Disability

Great piece. I too have cerebral palsy and have had to come to terms with certain limits (not fully, but I’m working on it). I’ve also had trouble with self-definition/identity, am I a person with a disability or am I a disabled person? The former ‘person with a disability’ feels like I have two lives in parallel: me (the person) and cerebral palsy (the circumstance of birth). The latter ‘disabled person’ implies unity, the cerebral palsy is part of how my brain functions and therefore how I function. It seems like a nit-picking language thing, but I feel it is an important question to answer as it affects self perception and my perspective of the world.
