My Mom was a reporter “back in the day” when you didn’t need a degree to be one. Then she moved to Canada and had a couple of kids. Eventually we got older and she decided to go back to work — except the entry-level reporters she was now competing against had at lease one degree and often more. She “only” had fluency in three languages (and the ability to fake a couple more) and years of practice in talking to sources, witnesses, etc. and actually constructing stories for people to read.
