Different types of paving

Paving can be done in many different ways. Paving can be used for building a driveway, retaining walls, and giving your garden, terrace and patio an overhaul to make it seem like you actually care about your outdoor facilities. With some well-done paving, the expression of your garden and driveway changes entirely, and once you have finished constructing, the amount of maintenance you have to commit to the paving is a lot less than the maintenance of grass, moss and unwanted growths.

Garden tiles — take your guests outside

Garden tiles instead of grass is both a practical and visual improvement to the latter. You can stay out late or get up early and use the outdoor facilities, because the evening and morning dew does not affect the garden tiles as opposed to grass and moss. You will not get wet socks while eating breakfast or having a beer to round up the day. In addition, for more formal events, your guests do not have to worry about getting their fine shoes wet and dirty. If the ladies are wearing stilettos, the soft soil will hamper their mobility.

Paving your driveway

Cars work best on a solid foundation — and grass, moss and weeds on soft soil does not count as that. Generally, people pave their driveway in two ways; either with large concrete slabs or paving stone. The latter is the most expensive, but with paving stone, you have more options to choose from in terms of colour, size and style. In other words, you get more freedom to get what you want with paving stone. It is easier and usually more practical to lay concrete slabs, but the creative utility is limited.

Paving right from the start — use Styrofoam foundation blocks

To increase the longevity of any kind of structure, Styrofoam helps preserving the material. Styrofoam foundation blocks are built into the soil to support whatever is being constructed. It prevents soil disturbances such as thawing and freezing from affecting the structure negatively. This, however, has to be done from the start, because once the structure, paving, or building is built, the Styrofoam cannot be integrated unless you are willing to remove your newly built facility. Make sure to at least consider using Styrofoam foundation blocks — it may be the best choice for you.

A solid foundation for improved transportation

Regardless of what you need to have transported, a solid foundation makes it a lot easier. Moving garden waste in a wheelbarrow will be an easier task with garden tiles or paving stone, because long grass and small hills will increase the resistance, ultimately forcing you to use more power unnecessarily. Furthermore, using concrete blocks as paving in your driveway will also increase the longevity of the car. Soft soil will in the worst cases force the car to use more power to get going — something that is not healthy in the long run.

Complete the look with retaining walls

If you have decided to pave the soil, retaining walls complements the paving very well. It completes the look, giving your garden and driveway a more clinical and more even look. Naturally, the hilly nature has its charm, but retaining walls makes it look like you have been doing some great work. Another benefit is that you do not have to spend a lot of time and extra power on moving the lawn mower up and down the bumpy landscape.
