Caveat: On presenting the facts, most first-time mothers *have no idea* what caring for newborn entails. We should write them up a fact sheet. It’s really hard to negotiate that first time because you’re not sure what you’ll be needing (among other things).
Additional point: Know your rights. If you’re covered by FMLA, your employer might not realize it. If you’re in academia, you’re covered by Title IX, but many policies are unwritten and those that are written are sometimes in conflict with the law. Wherever you are, your employer can’t discriminate against you for being pregnant.
