Shouldn’t the Mercury 13 be part of the article, and history, and referenced as an attempt to introduce diversity?

And what about these guys (and gals)? They didn’t make it to the moon but no one was making it to the moon then. If there had still been a moon program they would have been part of it.

I think it’s a poor argument to emphasize the failings of the early program, which were biased but due to global failings of the american society, and not intrinsic to NASA per se, and not focus on the positive of what came after.

There has been great progress, to the point where the initial question doesn’t really make sense as a talking point, IMHO.
