13 New Year’s Resolutions For Artists [2024 CHECKLIST]

1. Try To Paint Every Day

Set aside some time every day to paint. Even just 15 minutes can make a big difference! Whether you’re working on a large project or just sketching, consistency is key to improvement.

Here’s my secret technique to painting everyday:

And here’s my post about the results of drawing everyday for 30 days, if you’re curious:

2. Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Try something new. Experiment with different mediums, techniques, or subjects. You might surprise yourself with what you’re capable of.

A great way to motivate yourself to step out of your comfort zone is to participate in monthly art challenges.

3. Learn From Other Artists

Attend workshops, read art books, do master studies, and watch YouTube video-lessons taught by established artists in your field. Engage with the art community online or in person.

4. Embrace Failure As A Learning Experience

Mistakes and failures are inevitable parts of the creative process. That’s how you learn and grow as an artist. Instead of viewing them as setbacks, consider them opportunities to learn. Embrace the process of experimentation and don’t be afraid to try new things.

5. Seek Feedback And Critique

Share your work with trusted friends, mentors, or fellow artists. Get their feedback and use it to improve your art. Open yourself to criticism — it will help you identify areas for improvement and refine your artistic vision.

6. Create A Dedicated Workspace

Make your space a place where you can focus and be creative. Organize your art supplies, minimize distractions, and personalize your studio to inspire your artistic flow.

If you lack inspiration and you’re into clean girl/lofi/kawaii aesthetics, type “aesthetic desk” and check out related YouTube shorts — I think you’ll find something for you. 😉

7. Explore New Art Materials And Techniques

Try new things. You never know what you might discover. Experiment with a variety of art materials and techniques to expand your creative palette. Try new mediums like watercolors, acrylics, oils, or digital art software.

8. Document Your Artistic Journey

Keep a sketchbook or journal to document your creative process, ideas, and inspirations. This will help you track your progress, identify patterns, and revisit past works for inspiration.

9. Nurture Your Creativity

Read books, watch movies, listen to music, and go outside. Anything that inspires you can help you be more creative.

If you lack a source of creative stimulation, subscribe to 🫀art stuff — your monthly free 5-min dose of super useful drawing resources, culture & art inspiration:

10. Share Your Art With The World

Social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube are great ways to connect with potential collectors, curators, and art enthusiasts. And new tools like Threads or Mastodon are becoming more and more popular.

Create engaging content, share behind-the-scenes glimpses of your creative process, and promote your art through various platforms. Get it out there and let people see it!

And here are 3 more 2024 art resolutions to try:

11. Embrace The Metaverse And Digital Art

In 2024, the metaverse is expected to become a more mainstream platform for art creation and consumption. Explore the possibilities of creating art in virtual reality (VR) or augmented reality (AR) spaces. Experiment with NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to create unique and collectible digital art pieces.

12. Try AI-Powered Art Tools And Techniques

AI isn’t that bad. Instead of xing it out, explore the potential of AI-powered tools to enhance your artistic process. Experiment with AI-generated art forms, such as generative art or AI-assisted painting.

13. Embrace Sustainability And Eco-Friendly Art Practices

Sustainability is a big thing nowadays. Experiment with using recycled materials, natural pigments, and eco-friendly art techniques. Maybe you can even create your own?
