yes, there are some downsides to google cloud platform. in no particular order:

  • documentation is not as good as aws
  • stackdriver (gcp logs) feels detached, same for bigquery (which runs a slightly different ui)
  • many of the services are in beta and excluded from sla (cloud functions, bigquery, even the newer version of cloud sql)
  • cloud datastore is extremely feature limited
  • bigtable has a stiff starting price
  • bigquery/dataflow in streaming mode can get very expensive and hard to project
  • google cdn doesn’t work with custom sources
  • for standard compute, bandwidth is still the most expensive component (same pricing as aws)
