Absolutely, being able to use Gitlab/Github/bitbucket to host repos should really be one of the goals those “designer version-control” apps. Ultimately, both designers and developers should use the same platform. Abstract hosting its own repos is a means to an end, but it will sadly not foster open-source design or enough cross-discipline team dynamic (e.g. project teams may share configuration/style files across design and developments and those should be in the same place)

I gave the git-sketch plugin a quick try a while ago, and back then it didn’t allow merging the different branches or handling conflict… a bit of a deal breaker for me. I believe that has changed, so I’m going to give it another go, and trying out Kactus which based on the plugin (both were created by Mathieu Dutour).
