What about being the primary educator in your child’s life?

You’re absolutely right that parents are the first-line educators in their children’s lives. We even tell our son he is one of his sister’s first teachers and has a responsibility for helping her learn. However, it would be naïve and disrespectful of teachers to underplay the significance of the role they play in the lives of their students — our children. Our kids spend at least as much time at school or handling school business as we do at our jobs. (Does our work have an influence in our lives?) Unless we homeschool our kids, we must work in concert with the schools and teachers helping to shape our children.

My husband and I don’t shirk the 24/7+ responsibility we have to and for our kids. We are primary educators in their lives, but we do acknowledge and embrace that there is another primary influence — their teachers.
