The “chat” in “chat bot” is a distraction
Chad Fowler

We’ve found that when our robot initiates conversation with a “I spotted a problem, here are possible solutions, which one should I do?” people are very likely to respond (5 times more engagements than conversations initiated by a user request).
Also, when our bot was first launched, there was no “chat” component, he was all about doing his job. We very quickly had to add some smalltalk (respond to greetings, compliments, insults..) otherwise the robot was perceived as generally stupid, which was projecting on his perceived capability to solve bigger issues. If he can’t even say “hello” properly, how would he be able to handle my scheduling tasks?
