You might be surprised which niche chain ranked number one based on: Total sales, average sales per location, and how many locations they have in the USA as of 2017.

Any student wishing to complete their Nanodegree on Data visualization from Udacity must complete a capstone project. The requirement is to pick a visualization from makeovermonday and find a way to improve it by applying what I have learned throughout the program. The current visualization I have chosen to improve is below:

How did I improve the existing data visualization?

Even though the current visualization has interesting graphics, I will improve the title. It is too broad. I will make it more specific and measurable something like “The top 30 fast food restaurants in the USA for 2017”.

The current visualization is not interactive. I will create a dashboard with captions that can be clicked to move to the next bar chart graph to answer some questions most users may have. The type of visualization will be a metric output, and It will showcase the ranking results based on the total sales, average sales per location and total locations per fast food chain.

The current visualization is too busy, and it is not very clear what year is being presented since the data and some parts of the visualization shows 2017, but link says 2019. I will make sure all the graphs show the data is for 2017.

The current visualization is hard to read. I will make it less cluttered. The ranking will be sorted, so it will be easy to read. The dashboard will have annotations and supporting text to improve the user experience, and I will display the data such that the audience can arrive to the answers of the questions.

I will clearly show the correct year the data represents in the title. It will be simple and clear.

The visualization I will create will use colors designed for people with color blindness.

The data source will be displayed in each graph.

Problem statement:

The problem statement: What are the top 30 fast food restaurants in the USA for 2017?

The link to my fully improved visualization in Tableau Public is here:

Presentation:

Data Processing:

Downloaded the data in excel format from the link: https://data.world/makeovermonday/2019w50

Created a new column with the calculations to show the average sales per location.

Found out that some data was pre ranked wrong, and I fixed it to reflect the correct ranking before downloading it in Tableau.

In conclusion:

The visualization for the top 30 fast food restaurants in the USA for 2017 was challenging because the data was small and there was some data missingness and calculations had to be performed. What motivated me was the potential for improving the current visualization. I learned so much during the process of creating this capstone project and hopefully you enjoyed my new dashboard. I was able to apply what I have learned during the data visualization Nanodegree program; I think I accomplished to improve the current visualization, and at the same time I was able to answer the problem statement. I know there is always room for improvement. Did your favorite fast food restaurant make the top 30? What do you think?
